Travel by road across the Canterbury Plains to the foothills of the Southern Alps. At Springfield, board the TranzAlpine train to travel through the Southern Alps to Arthur’s Pass. From Arthur’s Pass, continue by road into the rugged, snow-capped Southern Alps of the Arthur’s Pass National Park and the Otira Gorge. Visit the old—and now virtually extinct—village of Otira before returning to Arthur’s Pass National Park for lunch at the Chalet. Return to Christchurch, stopping at the Waimakariri River for an exhilarating jetboat ride through the spectacular gorges. After the jet boating, you’ll stop at a sheep farm for late afternoon tea, followed by a sheep-shearing and sheep-mustering demonstration before returning to Christchurch.
