Tasmania is historic, timeless and stunningly beautiful. Hobart boasts a magnificent harbor and more days of sunshine than Sydney. Port Arthur was Australia s first penal settlement and is now the country’s leading historic site. To the north, Cradle Mountain is one of Tasmania s best-known national parks, and now a World Heritage-listed area.

Port Arthur Historic Port Arthur

The Port Arthur Historic Site is the bestknown of Australia’s penal settlements and is the most significant of 7 locations on the Tasman Peninsula Convict Trail. Connected to mainland Tasmania by only a narrow strip of land, it was used to confine habitual offenders. The 309-acre site has an interpretation center, over 30 historic buildings and beautiful gardens. The Port Arthur region also includes spectacular land formations along the coastline of the Tasman National Park, from the Tasman Blowhole to the cliffs at Waterfall Bay.

Arts and Crafts in Tasmania

The breath of inspiration fills Tasmanian galleries, studios and retail outlets, which display a stunning array or arts and crafts inspired by the unique island lifestyle, wilderness and specialist timbers. Tasmania can lay claim to a highest percentage of craftspeople than any other state - just take a look at the range of exquisite jewelry, fine arts, ceramics, photography; textiles, glassware and the creations of the state’s woodcraft artisans. Leatherwork, gorgeous handmade clothing, knitted sweaters, hand-dyed silk and embroidered linen add to the impressive line-up of rich creative items.
